RE: Whats the biggest rim i can put onmy 97' 850
I don't know. I purposely chose to go the other way -- from 17x7 inch Volans to 15x6.5 inch Lysithea -- from 205-45-R17 to 205-60-R15. I still don't understand why some folks like running 17 inch and 18 inch rims on their cars. My girlfriend's 850 with HD suspension rides so much smoother and quieter with 15 rims. There is no longer a need to stop before approaching speed bumps. The CD in CD player no longer skips. I haven't noticed any difference in handling.
I know that 205-50-R17 will rub the inner fendor well.
Anyway, here is the tire diameter/height calculator for you to calculate 18 inch equivalent of 205-45-R17
Height = (Width x (Ratio/100) x .03937 x 2) + Rim Diameter
(205 x (50/100) x .03937 x 2) + 17 = 8.07085 + 17 = 25.07085
(215 x (45/100) x .03937 x 2) + 17 = 7.618095 + 17 = 24.618095
(205 x (45/100) x .03937 x 2) + 17 = 7.263765 + 17 = 24.263765
(205 x (55/100) x .03937 x 2) + 16 = 8.877935 + 16 = 24.877935
(195 x (65/100) x .03937 x 2) + 15 = 9.980295 + 15 = 24.980295
(195 x (60/100) x .03937 x 2) + 15 = 9.21258 + 15 = 24.21258
(205 x (60/100) x .03937 x 2) + 15 = 9.68502 + 15 = 24.68502
(215 x (60/100) x .03937 x 2) + 15 = 10.15746 + 15 = 25.15746

RE: Whats the biggest rim i can put onmy 97' 850
i am running vault savanah 19's with 40 series tyres on my '96 850 R. I'm not sure of the
dimentions though.
They look **** hot but they rub the inner wells a fair bit and ride like a bitch.
they definatley wouldn't be my first choice - but they came on the car.
its at the mechanics at the moment but i'll get some pics when i get it back or find some of my old ones.
oO JOSH Oo

RE: Whats the biggest rim i can put onmy 97' 850
I have 18's on my 97 850. There are going to be two main issues you will need to either deal with, or just accept. Number one, with the larger wheels and tires, if you have people riding in the backseat of the car and you hit any kind of a bump, they are going to rub the wheel wells in the rear. The front wheels will rub anytime you hit a bump going too fast, which is usually above 20 mph. It annoyed me at first, but it has gotten better. Rubbing when I turn the wheels is not an issue.
I am still searching for a solution, i would like to find a way to lift my volvo about a 1/2 inch or maybe get some stiffer springs that wont decrease the ride height like most sport springs do. IPD sells overload springs which will work for that purpose, but they only make them for the rear wheels, not the front. I have been unbable to find overload springs for the front, and I know the rears wont work for the fronts. Anyways, I think the best bet is going to be replacing the shocks and springs to hopefully stiffen the ride and allow for less travel when I hit bumps.
If anyone has any suggestions for how to either raise the ride height or decrease the travel of the car when I hit a bump, your advice would be much appreciated.
