Default what's drawing current, killing battery with key off

I have a 94 850 turbo wagon with 160k on it. New battery installed. Right after I installed the battery I put a meter on it and found that something was drawing 10 amps with ignition in off position. I immediately disconnected the battery. I checked all fuses and I think they are good. Seems weird if it was a short a fuse would blow.

I'm not sure where to start trouble shooting this issue. Anyone see this before? Any help much appreciated

Thx

Aaron

Yep, What boxpin posted is one of the best methods......put a meter on it and start pulling fuses one by one until you find the circuit that is the culprit. 10 Amps is a pretty good draw!

Any chance that when you sit in it, key off, heater controls off you hear anything like the heater fan running ??

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions. I've pulled each of the fuses and re-measured and still drawing 10 amps with ignition off. Also listened carefully for anything such as the heater fan that might be still running but nothing evident. Still measuring 10.3 amps of current coming off the battery. If none of the fused circuits are responsible for the current draw, what might there be that is not fused the could be pulling the current?

Thanks

Disconnect the main feed to the alternator and check again. That is a pretty big draw, banking on your diode pack being gone.

Outside of the alternator being gone (as boxpin suggested) the only other thing I can remotely think of is a bad headlight switch shorting to ground, but I don't think that would draw 10 amps..........plus, pulling the fuse should have eliminated that. Just had an idea....if pulling the alternator does not work, try pulling the main feed to the starter motor!

The '96 I bought had an aftermarket remote lock/command start/alarm installed by a P/O. Something is toast with the command start and it seems to stick on after I use it. It was drawing exactly 10 amps and would drain the battery in 2 days. I disabled the command start/alarm and that seemed to solve the problem. The remote lock still functions and there is no extra current drawn.

A fuse pull should have found that problem though. It sounds like a short somewhere.

Bosch_repair

Here's a link on rebuilding a Bosch alternator (Volvo alternators built by Bosch). Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the part on replacing the rectifier (diode). That's if you're really ambitious. Just replacing the alternator with a rebuilt one should do.
