Where to find engine serial number??
Hello,
someone removed the factory sticker on the timing cover. This sticker had the engine serial number on it as well as maintenance information. I have a 1993 '850 and I really need to know the engine serial number (not VIN) b/c some parts are different depending on the serial number.
Volvo told me there's a number stamper "back of the block behing the #1 cylinder. Good luck! Can't get there and if I could it's too dark and dirty to read anything
SO ... where else can I find the # (if any) OR does Volvo have a way of determining engine serial number from VIN?
Informed minds need to know.

1. Clean the engine good.
2. Have either a strong LED or Halogen spot light (approx. $20 at Walmart)
3. Have an inspection mirror.
4. Good luck.
Please note that I'll be deleting the attachment within the next few days, so save it in your PC. I appreciate if you could notify me when you're done saving it.

There are on-line VIN decoders, but they will only tell you engine type, model, etc....not the engine serial number. JPN has provided the best answers, clean real good and use a mirror, or possibly a trip to the dealer. [:@]

I agree! I hope my answer didn't make you think I was being critical, I was merely agreeing with JPN's advice. Asking questions is the best way to learn about the car. And by the way, if no one has said it yet, Welcome t o the forum.
