Default White smoke issue??

this may be repetitive but here it goes...'95 850 turbo wagon,240k. please note I'm extremely dissatisfied with local service.

Had harness wiring issue behind dash....wouldn't start, all warning lights lit. Took it to a local shop with good references...some wires fried they spiced it but after that decided that the turbo was shot...no turbo issues prior to this repair. They quoted 1300+++ to replace turbo. A guy I work with suggested a friend of his that rebuilds turbos...got it done for 400. Local shop installed. Turbo boost was better than before.

Upon our use we noted that the motor ran fine... after running 5-6 miles we noted no apparent smoke while runing but when at idle at the light we saw large volumes of white smoke.....we continued home and upon my inspection found numerous air hoses left unconnected, including the down draft hose..I reconnected them. I noticed no burnt oil smell nor antifreeze odor. Car still runs and performs flawlessly. I have since taken it to another HIGHLY reccommended shop and they have suggested a new turbo.....I'm not convinced.

I have noted numerous references to the PCV system kit on this forum for similar issues. Is it possible ,or likely that lack of attention or incompetence during turbo installation such as I appear to have experienced could allow the PCV system to be filled with oil????
The circumstaces seem way to coincidental.

Thanks in advance for your input and sorry for the long post.

Hello Brad,

Welcome to the forum, and sorry about the situation.

Please note, that recommendations on automotive servicing shops from those who don't know much about cars is almost always useless (I don't know how many times I've repeated this, as well as how many times I'll have to repeat it in the future). Look for a shop that meets the following criteria:

- Specialises in Swedish/Euro makes.
-Employs ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certified Master Technicians.
- Uses OEM parts (Original Equipment Mfg; the same parts used by the dealer/assembly plants).
- Listens to your concerns carefully, instead of denying everything you say.
- Allows you in the work area upon your request and shows you the parts that have failed and explains to you why they need replacement.
- Dealer (you need to know your car or they'll make sure to rip you off).
- Etc...

Since you've done rebuilding the turbocharger I won't say much, but the best protection for your turbocharger is to use full-synthetic oil + OEM (MANN) filter. In hot climate, let the engine idle for 2-3 minutes before shutting it down. 1 minute would suffice in colder climate. This is done to "cool down" the turbocharger. Also, be easy on the gas pedal until the engine has reached the normal operating temp (3 O'clock on the temp gauge); about 10-15 minutes after start-up. Never allow your engine to go low on oil.

Moderator Tech is our top-dog & mentor. I too would do the PCV components as a kit, if not done lately. Also, make sure that you replace the timing belt + its pulleys + tensioner at every 70,000 miles or 5 years.

Working on modern cars requires significant amount of experience, knowledge,& hard work. I work on airplanes but some automotivesystems are far more advanced in certain areas than passenger airplanes.

For your future reference, see my 1st & 2nd replies at:

And if you can find a reputable shop that is willing to accept parts from customers, here are popular on-line vendors some of us have been using:

FCP Groton of Connecticut:
http://www.fcpgroton.com/index-exec/

eEuroparts:
http://www.eeuroparts.com/home.aspx

I hope this is of some use.

Thanxs for the info....I have a pretty good knowledge of basic mechanical repairs, is the Pcv system replacement something doable or should I run for the hills???I do have a decent collection of tools and an empty small garage space to work out of....Thanks again
