RE: Why HID updgrade?
HID's produce much much more light then regular Halogens do. Also do not buy off EBAY. HID's come with Bulbs/Ballasts/Wiring. You just can't install HID bulbs and expect them to work like a lot of people think.
You want to purchase your HID kit through SharpHID. John will take good care of you. Also get the kit that has the LIFETIME warranty on it. You wont regret it.
For $135 you can purchase an Apexcone 35W HID kit from SharpHID with a LIFETIME warranty. This is what I have and love it.
Also if you didn't know already with HID's there is a common misconception. People think the higher the bulb temperature the more light that is produced. However on the contrary the higher bulb temperature you go the less light it produces and what you do get is just a color change.
4300k-5000K are the brightest HID's bulbs. 6000K is the highest I personally would go. After that all you get is a different color with the higher bulb temperatures.
Also when you install them be sure to reaim them and if you can't do it have a local shop do it for you, should cost about $20 to have done. I haven't heard this "Have to have projector thing", but I wont say it isn't true or false. A projector will aim the light better then a regular reflector in a headlight housing. Less blinding affect. But like I said reaim them and you should be good to go.

RE: Why HID updgrade?
^Exactly, well said.
I've helped install an HID kit (8000k) in my friends 2004 GTO and we aimed the lights downwards. That is b/c if we left them the way they were, people will start to get more pissed off as they are in my city [:@]
I prefer 5000K b/c they are indeed the whitest and brightest. 8000k will shine with that annoying blueish/voilet tint due to the Kelvin scale.
So no need to retrofit huh? that's great news im going to check out those sites you mentioned and research a bit more. The ebay kits aren't that bad actually, they work well . . .

So the stock headlight housing doesn't need retrofitting?
I thought i read that some states require HID's to be in a projector type housing...
If that's not the case, 5000K HID here i come!

Edit: 4300k is actually the whitest and brightest. I don't know if you'll like that effect as much as a 5000 or 6000k though.

I too, like the blue tint. I just bought blue-beam LED kitsfor my machines...
....1/24 the actual size.
But hey, LEDs are similar to HIDs in terms of beam (except that LEDs cannot produce strong ray of beam without specially-designed thick lens). And some cars actually come with LED bulbs (ex: Lexus LS600hL's 3-eye beams).

RE: Why HID updgrade?
Do you guys have any tips on good ebay sellers to buy from? Mydepots that you mentioned is quite alot cheaper than sharpHID.com, about half the price when you factor in the cashback from live.com.. Do you think it is really worth twice the cost to go with sharpHID?
thanks

$100 for, Apexcone/DDM Ultra Slims 35W series on SharpHID. That is extremely cheap and if you find them on EBAY for less your getting less. You might get a complete package, Bulbs/Ballasts/Wiring but they aren't going to be quality components.
If you cannot afford $100 for HID's, then don't buy them.
Hell I will sell you my HID's so I can purchase the $100 ones from SharpHID. By the way mine are from SharpHID and are an Apexcone 35W system, they just aren't the slim version ballasts.
