Default Worth fixing a catalytic converter

So, i had an 850 turbo dumped on me, was told i could fix and drive it, or sell it. The ONLY thing wrong with this 850 is a bat catalytic converter.

Gotten 2 quite for it so far, one at $1500, the other at $900. I could wield it on myself i guess but i dont know if i really want to do the work on a car ill probably only drive if i need to haul something around. Guess im just looking for other input. Thanks!

Edit: Should be good to note the car itself has 217,000 miles, with a complete engine swap at 110,000 miles.

Where do you live that it costs 900-1500 for a cat? You should be paying in the 200-300 range.

Where do you live?

I would search for a comparable replacement or OEM from someone parting their car then find a shop that can weld it in if you cant do it yourself.

Here is how you do it:

Find the model:
MagnaFlow Catalytic Converters - 49-STATE & CANADA Catalytic Converters For Trucks, Suv's, American Muscle, Diesel, & Sport Compact Vehicles

Take the model number and find it cheap:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MAGNAFLOW-36...a36b88&vxp=mtr

Buy it and weld it in.

I am floored at how much you were quoted.

Well i have 2 rx7 financial crisis 3s that im trying to get towed in, along with a honda CRV. Having the 850 just given to me was quite a shock. Hell this car took me to school and back when i was 6 years old! then from austin, dallas, and houston many a time. Its just not my type of car, but its still an amazing thing.

Actually I've been working on this for the past few days. Got it up and working, passed all inspections and what not again.

You didn't say which year but for my 95 this is the bolt in OEM style pipe from rock auto for just a hair under $300.

More Information for EASTERN CATALYTIC 40301

The Magnaflow would be way cheaper but involve more ability and effort.

generic OEM style from the mechanic. was more a behind the table deal. He'd put a new one on another 850 that ened up getting in a wreck 2 weeks later. he sold me some scrap metal.

dont actually have picture of the work though, sorry to say. I did go to a garage one of my miata friend works at. We lifted and welded it there.

I'd do it, personally. Find an independent or a shadetree mechanic. Fix it right, but on the cheap. Drive it a bit. If you don't like it, it'll trade or resell better fixed.

Or, cut rspi a good deal, he seems to be knowledgable on 850s, and is capable of fixing it.

Read the 'new 850 owners' thread about other things to check. If it's due for a timing belt, just as an example, that will add to the repair bill. With P&L, mine was close to $700. Parts were about half, could've done it myself if I could've found the time. Mine was 30k overdue, I have 3 small kids, a job, a side business, and it was cold here - so, I hired it out to a trusted friend who is a mechanic.
