Default One more Yellow R sighting...

I have owned Volvo's since 1986 and did not know that there was such a thing as a Yellow 850, not to mention the R. I was shopping for a car for my daughter about 2 months ago and was blown away when I learned of the Yellow Beast. Every since then I have been thinking of a way to get my hands on one.

I was the proud owner of a '79 262c once. I really like rare things, especially things I can actually use. So, the parts & service departments at the Volvo dealer her in LR AR claims they have never seen one. But the Volvo grave yard guys in a small town about 50 miles away claims they had one several years ago. Well about a week ago my daughter spotted one in my town just outside of LR and it was pretty beat up. It had S90 wheels, black fin, dense yellow paint, no markings and just looked ragged out. So I had her follow it and when they parked I peeped in the windows and low and behold there was the split leather/fake suade seats. A '95 yellow R on it's way to a grave I guess.

So, I have been checking the 3 hot spots for them and I have come to the conclusion that about 2 per month are put up for sale. I seen a posting where a guy in the Denver area had two, one he drove and the other for parts. I hope to have one very soon. One of two in Arkansas.

Default Yellow In Japan...

I lived in Japan for 4 years. Almost every other car in Japan is Yellow or some other bright color. I had an orange Capella (Mozda 626). And 30,000 miles in Japan is like 150,000 in USA. Just bumper to bumper driving around 35 mph daily.

Also, in Japan to keep a 4 to 6 year old car on the road cost a lot of money if you are a citizen. Visitors can go to junk yards and pick up nice used cars all day for $3,000. I'm talking cars with 12,000 miles on them. Well, that was 20 years ago so let me back up. That is where i purchased my first Volvo duty free, '87 740 GLE.

Here is one for sale in NY with only 79K on it. I just talked to the guy and he has a guy from Kansas that is interested and has made arrangements for somebody to go and look at the car. The dealer selling it said he would pretty much sell to whoever comes up with the money first, and the guy having it looked at has not put a deposit down or anything. It's near NY City which really turns me off. If it wasn't 500 miles away from me I would probably go look at it, but not that far. He has had it listed for six days and said he is getting plenty of interest, but no buyers. 79K for less than $5,000 should have been sold by now.

Default I picked up that Yellow R in New York...

I guess I could not resist. After driving my daughter's S70 GLT I had to get a sports car, Volvo of course.

I sent a car inspector to check out the Yellow R in NY (Queens) and he told me all the things that was wrong with it short of a test drive. While he was warming it up for a test drive the radiator bursted. Hurrah! Can't sell a car without a radiator so they installed a new one. I flew up there and picked it up a couple of days later and drove it back to Arkansas (not Kansas), so there are at least 2 in Arkansas now.

The interior is in real good condition. Machanically is is in fair condition. I think they were running synthetic oil in it because the oil looked brand new on the stick. I had it changed before I headed back to Arkansas. I was afraid to do so but I drove back without changing the timing belt. I had it changed as soon as I got back and it had a million cracks in it. Yikes, no splits just age cracks.

I've taken care of several minor things with it already and I have two things I want to take care of. 1. True R spoiler. 2. A/C Compressor replaced (scheduled tomorrow). Can't have a car WITHOUT A/C in Arkansas. I have photos posted.

Glad somebody who will take care of it picked up that car. I kept eyeballing it on Yahoo! autos, tempted to buy it, but I figure if I'm going to get a yellow, I should hold out for a wagon. Congrats rspi!

You think you are going to get a yellow T5R wagon. GOOD LUCK!!!

As far as I can tell less that 25 of them brought into the USA. If I ever see one for sale I will not be posting a link to it on this board, but I will be posting pictures of it in my garage.

Thanks Bur Jr. I hope to have it a while. I'm going to try to keep my 960 to use everyday and use the R just a few times a week. I usually put 30k on a car each year.

Jim, that's funny. I think I would like a wagon as well, I like going fishing and hauling stuff from time to time. I'm trying to talk my wife into a T-5 wagon but she's not going for it.

I'm going to check with our state motor veh reg office tomorrow to try to find out how many '95 Yellow R's are out there.

I'm looking at it this way, Jim: If I find one, I'll have a Yellow T5-R wagon. If I don't, I won't blow cash on another Volvo 850 when I already have a perfectly good 97 854R. I've actually seen two advertised in the past 2-3 months. One was in California, and the dealership decided to sell it only to a wholesaler since they felt it had issues. I tried working with a local indie dealer to get it, without luck. I'm not sure if the other one was legit or not. When I called on it, the cell phone message was just some profanity.

It is definitely lowered. Is it worth 8200 dollars?

Do!

But idk, 8200 is a bit much. 100K Miles, although it is rare.

When I think of value, I think of how it stacks up against other cars that cost $8,500. So, lets see...

Would I buy this rare Yellow 850 T-5R, or this 2004 Hyundai with 72,000 miles on it for $8,999? http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...e&rdpage=thumb

Or would I rather have a Honda Accord, ranging from 1999 to 2005, priced from $8,000 to $9,000 with an average milage of 108,000? I don't think so.

How about a 2005 Ford Five Hundred with 90k on it for $8,998? http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...standard=false I doubt it.

To me, if it is truly in good shape, and I had cash to buy, I'd rather have the pride of the Yellow 850 T-5R than one of those cars. The sad thing about it is that the Volvo would likely outlast all of the ones above except for the Honda. I think the Honda would give it a good shot.

That's a good way to look at it I guess. Never thought about it that way. But for me, I look at what other 850's are going for or the possibilities of other 850's. Like my wagon for example, I bought it for $300, supposedly not running, well, it runs, regardless, I'm doing an engine swap. Which means for about $1300 I will have an 94 855 turbo with a 100k miles on it.

I really don't understand why people (especially the young) purchase newer cars that are usually out of warranty for $8,000 to $10,000 when they can purchase a low milage car, like a S70 or 960 Volvo for $3,500. I just don't get it. I don't even know why they would buy a new cheap car for $14,000 or $17,000. (I guess financing would play a part).

If they picked up a '98 Volvo, with 80k on it, it would outlast those cars hands down. They may run into some upkeep repairs, say a timming belt change or breaks, or even a cel light repair, but it would not cost them the tune of $420 per month plus the cost of newer car insurance. If you had a '98 Volvo, and you put $300 a month into it for 6 months, I'm sure you would run out of things to do. Not to mention Volvo's are thought of to be good cars. Somewhat classy.

My assistant lined me up in her sights one day and started telling me all the wonderful things her newer car had and my '97 960 had all of the features she was proud of plus more. She backed way off. The only thing she had that my 960 did not have was a HUD (Heads Up Display - Showed dash info on the glass). Which I might add broke 6 months later, that I fixed for her. LOL.

Buy a clean older Volvo and enjoy the low cost of good transportation. And if you love to drive get a turbo, they are FUN!

Plus the new cars look so cheap too. Whenever I ride in a friends "newer", every time I close the door I feel like I'm going to break it. Everything's so plasticy.
