Default Worn Tyres Question: When Should I Replace Them?

Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed the tread on my tyres is getting quite low, and I’m wondering how to tell if it’s time to replace them. I know the legal minimum tread depth is usually 1.6mm, but is it safer to replace them earlier?

Also, does uneven wear mean something's wrong with alignment or suspension? I drive in a mix of wet and dry conditions, so safety is a big concern.

Any tips for choosing replacements, or advice on how to extend the life of tyres, would be greatly appreciated!

simple if you drive in a lot of rain and wet conditions then the less thread you have then the tire will displace less water and its easier to skid , obviously new tires are best but we cant drive on new all the time so 1.6mm is quite safe at the legal speed of say 120km/hr but if you in Germany and want to drive at 250 then no
On the other scale if you live in a dry country where it does not rain then even 1mm is fine , here in South Africa the limit is 1mm , its fine in winter as there is no rain for months , but not summer as one has big downpours , lots of accidents in summer here when it rains and its not due to 1mm rule , some have almost none !
There are many reasons for uneven tire wear , tire pressure, bad suspension , alignment , unbalanced tires and obviously bad driving (spinning tires on pull off) and driving around fast bends fast on a regular basis

There have been no replies to this thread as its a general question and not related to Volvo, probably a google search will give these results
