Anytime you disconnect the battery, the battery dies, you pull out and disconnect the radio, replace the radio, etc., you will get locked out of your stereo because of the security feature. To get the radio code for your car:
1. Look in your owners manual booklet. There is usually a white card in there with the 4 digit code on it.
2. Pull the radio out and see if it is written on the radio chassis.
3. Look in the (https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-850-16/cannot-start-radio-after-putting-new-battery-52074/) glove box. Some people stick in on the inside of the glove box door.
4. I actually write it on the passengers side sun visor mirror lid.
5. Contact your local dealer with your VIN. They may ask you to prove ownership. If your radio was changed they will need the radio model # and serial number off of the top of the radio (sticker).
6. If you don't have a local dealer, call Volvo Cars of North America with the VIN. 800-458-1552.
That should do it. Once you get it try to put it somewhere you can find it easy. I'd like to start the trend of writing it in the passenger side visor mirror flap. Write it there with a sharpie.

If you have failed the 3 tries to get it right and are now locked out, there are a few options.
1. Just drive around with the radio on until you get a new chance. I think it will take about 2 hours of driving time. It can be 20 minutes here, 30 minutes there, it will add up the time.
2. Turn the car on the accessory position "I" (not started) and leave the radio on for 2 hours. It will reset and give you another 3 tries. Some radios the position is run "II".
3. Look in the owners manual and follow those instructions. If you don't have the owners manual, you can get it here:

NOTE: If your radio reads ERROR, it is likely because there is a cd stuck in the changer or in the deck. If that is the case, unplug the changer or get the disc out of the player. I had a CD changer with a broken gear tooth that stopped my changer from working.
That ought to do it.
