Default Auto transmission problems for the past 40k miles

2001 c70 hpt 140k auto 5speed the tranny with j3309 fluid

So everyone tells me my tranny is on the way out. It's been like this for the past 40k miles and it's still running. Something tells me it's not on it's way out and it's something that can be fixed.

My transmissions has clunking in and out of gear problem, it doesn't shift smoothly.

symptoms
-2-1 is the biggest issue, it slips out pretty hard, more so when i'm doing like a left turn while slowing down
-1-2 does it sometimes, but it's not as noticeable as the 2-1 downshift
-use to have 2-3 rev rise then slam into gear problem, but that got a lot better after i did a full fluid flush.
-drive to reverse can take very long sometimes, and it slams pretty hard into reverse
-when car is in gear and at a stand still in idle and foot on brake, the car thumps, i can feel it and hear it, most likely from transmission? or maybe engine/transmission mounts?
-all of these things seem to be worst when the car has been driven for a while or has been in stop and go driving. cold startups in the morning don't show these signs until the car is fully warmed up and hot.

things i've done:
-fluid change, it helped the 2-3 rev rise slam into gear, 2-1 is still there, and maybe 2-1 even got worst after the change
-b4 servo is fine and it's not even for my year model, looked anyways!
-top mount and bottom trq mount is fine, i just changed them, no improvement
-pray a lot, didn't help so far.

I can't figure out what's wrong with it, i read on so many threads of 01's doing this but all of them ended with no solution. This all started with the 2-3 rev rise/slam, then slow to engage drive/reverse, then got worst with the other symptoms, it seems like it has topped off in the past 20k miles though. Stop and go driving seems to make this transmission go nuts and do all sorts of things. As for updates, i don't know if my car or if the c70's has them. I know my car doesn't have the stop neutral right now.

1) if there is a software update do you think it will fix the 2-1 issue? why would it slam out harder when i do left turns while slowing down?

2) I heard some people say the speed sensor is the problem, thoughts?

3) my R D 3 2 1 P light indicator on the shift lever is out, will this affect anything?

4) can you find any patterns with all the symptoms i listed?

5) if my transmission is busted please advise which volvo model has a compatible transmission i can swap in, and please note if i need the tcu.

thank you, and sorry for the long post. any help would be greatly appreciated.

have you checked the motor mounts? ....they can cause the clunk sound when it shifts if the rubber mounts are broken and falling out of the motor mounts.

Yes, I tried that not to long ago actually. Replaced top trq mount, bottom transmission trq mount, and passenger side front engine mount. Made no difference unfortunately. thanks though, any suggestions are welcome.

Default trans....

I have a 2003 C70 convertible with auto trans. 80,000 miles. I changed fliud using Toyota t-5 and had the same problems. I googled Volvo trans fluid for the cheapest price and flush the system and filled with Volvo fliud. All my problems stopped during the frist drive. I have about 2000 miles and no more problems.

Where did you get your volvo trans fluid at? It must have been a fortune. Someone told me t-5 toyota was the same thing. If you can, can you point out exactly what symptoms you were having? and where you having those problems before you changed it to toyota?

thanks for the help

Default trans fluid

I didn't have any problems, the car just had over 70,000 miles and it was very dark in color.
After I flushed with and filled with Toyota t5 I had all kinds of problems. Bad shifting, slaming into first after sptopping, slamming into gear when shifting.
I googled the correct fluid and I do not remember where I purchased it. Eveything stopped after I changed to Volvo fluid.
I think I paid around $60 for enough for 2 flushes. No problems after the Volvo fluid flush.

My '99 S70 GLT had the exact same issue as yours when I first bought it. My wrench insisted on flushing the tranny, replacing the fluid with Valvoline MaxLife ATF. I REALLY didn't want to do it. I run Mobil1 full-synthetic ATF in both an Audi B4 Cabrio and an ML55 ///AMG. He flatly insisted, so I let him have his way.

I was completely wrong... something about the tendency of ATF to expand when it gets hot. The MaxLife made the S70 tranny happy. Nearly 250,000 miles on it, and it shifts like new.

Just out of curiosity, what would motivate somebody to put Toyota-Spec fluid into a Volvo-Ford transmission? Am I missing some logical connection?

2001 5speeds take the volvo 3309 transmission fluid, which is the same as mobile 3309 and supposedly the same as type-iv toyota. Makes sense since my volvo uses an a/w transmission which is built by toyota's subdivision. I use type-iv because it's 5 dollars a quart rather than 20dollar volvo stuff.

I'll try to ask a transmission expert about a high life atf in mine, but this boards and others tell me very specifically that this transmission can only use this "special" one.
