Default C70 Ragtop a "V5" or "Straight 5??"

Hello,...I was hoping to call on the mechanically inclined folks here...

Can someone tell me if the 01 Volvo C70 Convertible LPT is a "straight 5" or a V5? I know I'm a mechanical idiot,..my goofy logic tells me the V is called such because it is in the form of a V and therefore the cylinders are evenly placed on each side of the V. This logic tells me that the C70 indeed must therefore be a Straight 5 because of having an odd number of cylinders.

I cannot see that far down in the engine bay to see what this is.

Hey,..I'm a cartoonist and artist not a mechanic so excuse my ignorance on this subject.

The C70 is an inline 5. I'm not aware of any V 5 cylinder engines. Let's see some cartoons.

I've yet to ever see or hear of a V5. it is a straight 5 ( inline 5) you cna tell by where the plug wires go. a V8 has 4 wires going to each side of the motor.

Hey..........maybe it's a rotary........... A rotary engine is always configured with odd cylinders. The U.S. used rotarys in tanks in WWII...............aircraft engines

Its in no way shape or form a rotary motor. Its an inline 5. How could there possibly even BE a V5? There would need to be an even amount of cylinders to create a V shape.
Though I think an attempt to create such a motor would be a good cartoon, lol.

Inline 5. Just like most of the Volvo's on the market used or new. Besides the 4 cylinders and six cylinders and the V8 s80.

I think Reg was joking when he said it was a rotary... And you're wrong. VW did make a V5 on some golf models. As well Olds made one that never made production. There does not need to be a equal amount of cylinders on each side of the motor, since each back does not fire at the same time. I would think that if you're going to add a 5th cylinder to make a V shape. It makes more sense to keep the numbers even and add a second one. However the V is never at 90 degrees from each other, and apearently the V5 uses a realy low angle to keep it working nicly. Its closer to a srtaight 5, then a V5, but since its not in a straight line they called it a V.

Ive heard of that... but like you said.. its more of a staggered inline 5 than a V. Something like if someone cut off the Cylinder in a VR6 motor. lol, a VR5.

You could in fact make a V5 or other odd numbered V. The trick would be in balancing the crankshaft. Of course it's just easier to put the same number of cylinders on each side of the crank.

Yeah, the VW VR6 (and the shorted 5-cyl off-shoot that was mentioned) is a so-called narrow-angle V6, with only a 15 degree angle betweenthe two rows of cylinders (instead of the normal 60 degrees for a V6).So basically it looksmore like a zig-zag of alternating cylinders, rather than two distinct banks. In fact, I am pretty sure that the VW VR6 only has one cylinder head that lays across the tops of bothsets of cylinders, since they are so close together. It ends up being shorter than an inline-6, but not as short as a 60-degree V6.

Mazda RX-7 had a rotary engine. Cyclinders were very unique. I believe it was based on the Wankle (sp?) design.
