On the C70's around 2000, is the timing still accomplished with belts instead of chains? If the belts wear out and break while driving, are the valves in danger of colliding with the tops of the pistons?

On what models and years did timing chains begin to be used? Thanks!

 

Yes and yes. Timing belts are used on ALL the 5 cyl aluminum block engines. ( 1993-~2016 and the 4 and 6 cylinder variants)

They are all interference engines - if the belt breaks, or becomes misaligned - valves are bent.

The 3.2/3.0turbo 6cyl FoMoCO/Landrover/Volvo engines used in various Volvos (2006?-2016?) do not have a timing belt. The (2015+) later 4 cylinder direct injection engines do use a timing belt.
