c70i cabriolet front end annoying knock
a really annoying knock, you could hear outside the car at low speed 4-5 mph changed the struts, strut bearings, wishbones, drop links and track rod ends, whilst changing the track rod end {drivers side} i noticed the inner tie rod was quite loose and if pulled and pushed in and out i could just hear a slight knock, i bought the tool and part to replace the inner rod {not as difficult as i feared} and then very pleased with myself took the front end rebuilt car out on the school run only to find the knock was still there, it knocks on road humps it knocks on the level, it knocks if you rock the car side to side, my nightmare seems to have come true and i am going to have to no.1.scrap the car no.2 replace the anti roll bar its the only thing left....or no.3 simply live with it, after all it passes mot after mot, i spent hours underneath her pushing her up and down, the knock was very audible, but no matter where i put the crow bar there was no movement, i undid the drop links from the roll bar ...it still knocked, i prised the bar against the steering rack... no movement still knocking, beaten i started to pull myself out from under the car, doing so i caused it to knock again, but this time i felt it too, through my left hand, which was grasping the track rod end bar i took the wheel off the near side, but couldnt find anything loose, however when i rotated the track rod end back and forth with a pair of grips there was a knock... had i fitted a new, but defective track rod end ? i undid the track rod from the wheel, rotated it back and forth and there it was a creaking knock noise.... i pulled the gater off the steering rack and the near side inner ball joint {the one and only part i had not renewed) was stiff and creaked when i moved it.... but surely this tiny ball joint could not cause the knock which i could feel through the pedals and hear from both sides of the bulkhead whilst driving ? after all it wasnt loose and had no play in it at all, one spray with wd40, a wipe with a rag then roll the joint around in its socket whilst applying grease and bingo..... the knock has gone, drives as beautifully and quietly as it did before... on the up side the money that i spent on struts, wishbones, links etc was not wasted they were indeed all shot at, but if you have something similar going on... spend the extra £20 quid and replace both inner tie rods whilst your down there ! even if they appear to be fine, now for the cabriolet roof that has suddenly started to not work, in conjunction with all the windows dropping at ignition, oh the joys of motoring in a grand older car !
