Default How do I get a spare key?

Hi all! My daughter has a 2008 Volvo C70 and she only has a single key. As a Mom, having her reliant on a single key and not having a spare to keep on hand in an emergency kind of freaks me out. However, the Volvo dealership has told me that Volvo know longer has the "blanks" for 2008 Volvo C70s. Blank may not be the correct word, but I'm told I'm basically looking for a key that can be custom programmed by the dealership as an ignition key for her car. They suggested I reach out to online forums to see if anyone has any idea how I can get one - or a reliable Volvo/Swedish car parts place that might have ignition keys that can be custom programmed.

Any help - better ways to refer to what I'm looking for - would help greatly.

Thank You,

Suzanne

There appear to be many for sale when that part number is googled - perhaps ask a different dealer. The dealer (or anyone with a VIDA supscription) will need to "program" your car to accept the signal from the new remote and key for them to work. I've never done that on that type of key (have done many on the 99-07 cars) so I can't describe the exact process. (earlier cars require 2 downloads, one for the immobilizer chip in the key and one for the remote. On the earlier cars you can't make a used remote work - without the code printed on the bag the remote came in when new)

I would also call a different dealer. You can call a local locksmith and ask "can you make a key for this car" and see what the locksmith says. The aftermarket provides for a lot. More than you'd think.

You're right to take action on this. Having one key is insane, honestly. It's not something you'd need to worry about, as it's not your problem. It is however insane.

I've called all the Volvo dealers in the area. All are telling me that they don't have any in stock and cannot order them from Volvo since Volvo no longer makes/stocks these keys. So far all the local locksmiths are telling me that I need the blank - but that even if I manage to find a blank, it will still need to be programmed at a Volvo dealer. I have no problem having the Volvo dealer program a spare key, but I am unsure how I can get the right blank. There are some people telling me that even blanks are VIN number specific, and some people telling me that no they aren't you just need one for your specific Volvo model number but that you have to be sure that it has never been programmed previously. I have no idea what is true. All I know is I would HATE to have to just scrap a perfectly good car with only 60k miles because she's lost her key and Volvo doesn't make them anymore. It's crazy. I also don't want to spend a fortune on multiple keys on baby that might not work and it looks like that could easily happen.

That's why the Volvo dealers all suggested I contact a Volvo forum to see if anyone had any recommendations on reputable parts places.

Default Volvo parts online

Hi,

go to some of the reputable Volvo parts companies on-line. The good ones will ask for you VIN so they can then check to see if the key they sell will work with your car.
