Inconsistent battery draw

Inconsistent battery draw
Greetings! I had posted in mid-November; I ended up purchasing a 1999 C70 for $400. It needs some work, but it runs and shifts fine- need to trace a possible coolant leak, do some brake work, etc... but it's really a steal at $400. It has the 2.3.
Bought a new battery for the car... previous owner had disconnected the stereo (it has the premium CD changer with external amp) because she thought that was draining the battery. I hooked up the new battery, and for several weeks didn't have any issues at all. One morning... battery was dead. After recharging it, it died again the next morning.
I hooked up a multimeter to look for a parasitic draw tonight and the car is drawing .04 amps... well within normal specs.
I DID notice a popping sound coming from the speakers when I went to start the car when I was having these battery drain issues. Has anyone run into an issue of the stereo causing a drain? It has the external amp in the trunk of the car as well.. could that be the problem? It's difficult to trace when it doesn't drain all the time!
Thanks for your help..
