New to the forum, so be gentle! I have an '00 C70 2.3T Convertible. On occassion I can hear a slight knock coming from the deep right side of the engine. It's not loud, but you can certainly hear it with the hood closed.

This knock comes and goes, so I don't believe it's a rod or anything. But I just can figure out what it is.

Also, how smooth are these engines? Mine isn't miss firing, but on accelleration, you can "feel" the engine in the gas pedal and the steering wheel. My wife's XC90 is much smoother and much quieter.

Is it only when giving it gas?

 

I hear the knock when the car is parked and idling. It appears to be coming from the left side of the engine (right side when you're looking at the engine) It's not at the top of the engine bay... it's down deep.

 

Then one of the rod bearings might be bad.

At first I was thinking lifters but not anymore.
