Default Location of coolant sensor?

Hi,

I'm on a road trip and my coolant indication went intermittent and then dead (cycling normal to low, then stuck at low). The engine is running fine and the coolant level is normal, so nothing major is likely to be wrong, however I'd like to be able to spot an overheat if one arose on this 3000 mile trip (700 miles done!)

I've no documentation other than the owners manual with me and a small tool kit (but never far from an OReilley's to borrow if I buy some parts!)

I'm assuming a connection has gone bad or maybe the sensor. Unlikely it's the indicator, yes?

Questions...

where is the cooland temperature sensor on a 2001 C70 HPT conv?

any other accessible connectors to check?

do any important systems rely on the sensor / connection that supplies the instrument panel indicator?

Thanks!

and special thanks to Tech - it's running fine on regular unleaded, averaging 24.5 mpg (US) mostly cruising not too far above the legal limit ;-)

Default RE: Location of coolant sensor?

If you follow the upper radiator hose to the engine the sensor is in the thermostat housing. It screws into the bottom part of the thermostat housing. You will need a 19mm wrench to remove and install it.It may give you some trouble getting it out they don't give you much room to get on the sensor. The engine computer gets signals from the coolant temp sensor for cold start up and warm start up.The computer will go into a preprogrammed mode till it is replaced. You might also want to check the thermostat if you can.One other thing does the guage do the guage test when you turn the key on?It should move some then settle.
