We send the head out to be checked and rebuilt as needed, so cost varies.

I understand the idea of changing the belt early. But it is by no means a common issue. I have seen plenty of timing related failures (never the belt actually, usually the idler or tensioner). In each case, the car was well overdue to have it replaced.

If I were to suggest to a customer to change it early, they would probably go on a forum like this and bitch about how the "stealership" tried to sell them an unnecessary timing belt replacement early.

Of course, if you buy a used car and you do not know when the belt was changed- change it. Don't risk it. But there is no need to replace the belt every 60k (on every engine with a 70k belt) or at 80k (on an engine with a 105k belt) or 100k (on engine with a 120k belt). The truth is, if the belt was due at 105k and it failed at 90k (and less than 10 years), you probably could have called Volvo Customer Care and they likely would have fixed it for free.
