Default is it my head gasket gone

hi all im new here and new to volvos. i have just recently bought a c70 t5 gt 1998 r.
i have already done the pcv replaced all parts and its as good as new now my next problem or not as i may find out is
the coolant hoses on the c70 when the car is upto temp they get very hard when the car is cold they are quite soft and supple.
what has promted me to ask the question is because i had a hose split yesterday on the car (hose from the underside of the expansion tank to the back of the engine had split but on closer inspection i feel that the clip had been wound up so tight that it had dug into th pipe.
the car doesnt seem to use any water and there is no oil in water and no milky residue on the dipstick or the oil filler cap i have noticed that there is a small amount of smoke coming fron the engine block in the head gasket area near the turbo.thanks for your help in advance

justin

Maybe the thermostat is bad causing excessive pressure.
