Unhappy Old remote works but not the new ones

I just got a 2007 C70 and love the car, but it only came with one key & remote. So I need en extra for my wife. After reading all the threads about needing to get this programmed at the dealer, I went to the local dealer for the key, remote, software, and programming. They convince me to buy two in case I lose one since the labor and software do not change. All in for 2-remotes/keys and programing, with tax, for $610. Ouch!! This is just for keys.

Now they tell me that the new keys will start the car but will not open the doors with the remote button. I need to bring the car back for them to troubleshoot this problem (extra labor of course). Does this sound like a problem with the car since the original remote works just fine? Any ideas what this could be?

Ok - your old key starts and unlocks/locks the car. - That originally required 2 software downloads using VIDA, 1 to make the car recognize the key and 1 to make the car recognize the remote.

You purchased new key/remotes. Each required 4 things, A new part, the funny black nubby key with remote buttons, a cut metal emergency key hidden in the remote section, and 2 downloads, 1 for the "key" to be recognized and 1 for the remote to be recognized by the car.

So, if your new keys will start the car, but not lock the car - were the software downloads done to make the car recognize the remotes? It seems like you should have paid for that already - and not need diagnostic time to figure out they did not finish the job. Now perhaps they did not do the second download to "activate" the remotes - and I would expect you to have to pay for that but - I have never programmed that style key/remote but $610 is a bargain for two keys compared to other Volvos in that year range.- Was something left off? Like the 2 software downloads to make the car recognize the new remotes?

Sounds like when I purchased the software not everything was downloaded or ordered. Looking at the parts invoice it only has the Remotes (Part#30772198), Key (Part#30753596), and Master key SW (Part #30667237)

Default Kind of the same question

I have a 2009 C70 and can't find the key. The car is in a storage shed, locked and about 400 mls from the nearest Volvo dealer. Would it be possible for me to get the software to program the remote? I'm wondering if that would be cheaper than having the car hauled that far.

Update: Took the car back and they said the two keys were faulty. The new keys work.

Yes - you will need an account with Volvo, and a VIDA subscription, That is set up at Volvotechinfo.com. You need a compatible cpu/laptop with compatible operating system, and a compatible DICE unit. You will need fast internet access where the car is parked. Purchase a VIDA subscription (3,30, or 365 days) download and activate it. Plug in your DICE between the OBD port and your cpu and set up the DICE unit so it will talk to VIDA. With the new (unprogrammed) key in the ignition slot, purchase the appropriate software download to make the key be recognized by the car and install it. You should have a quality battery charger attached to the car at all times during this process - if the battery gets weak the process fails.

I have downloaded software to make new modules/keys/remotes/etc work hundreds of times - but sometimes the process is not easy. There have been many times when the process has failed - hardware reasons, software reasons, unknown reasons, wrong part delivered, or wrong phase of the moon. If there is a problem - say you order the wrong software, or the download/installation fails so you order the software again - to get a refund you must do it by email. The help desk is done by email, and there is no phone number to call. Many times if there were a problem it would take several days to get it sorted out with emails back and forth.

For 30 years computers have been a hobby for me. Building, upgrading, both Unix and Windows. I wrote scripts for Unix servers, worked with Windows servers and networked at least 25 devices in my 2 shops, using multiplexers and modems (all very cryptic stuff, no mouse/all character based, no easy button push or click to make it work) then converted all to a windows network - terminals, printers, cash drawers, etc. - and was the network administrator for my system.

VIDA is harder to work with -

If you don't have the technical ability or the patience - I would imagine most garages have dealt with replacement automotive software and could figure it out. A problem is that every car manufacturers coding/software download/installation procedure is slightly different, with a totally different interface.
