Default starter-flywheel problems! HELP!

All of a sudden, yesterdaymorning, when starting my 99 C70 2.4L Turbo, there was this loud grinding noise when starting the car and continued all the way to my work (10 miles). In the afternoon I brought my car to the dealer and initially the grinding sound started againon my way there, but a soon as it picked up some speed it stopped, even when stopping it at the dealer (and letting it idle) the sound was gone. Then I restarted it, and the grinding sound was there again! The dealership thinks it is the starter (estimate ~$620,-), but that the flywheel might be damaged as well (estimate an additional $2200,-). The dealership is sure it is not a transmission issue. Please advise of what I can do! Is it common for this to happen and what specifically could it be that is causing the noise/damaged?THANKS for any help/info that anyone can give me!

The starter is hanging up. And yes it could damage the flywheel. The only way to k now for sure is to replace the starter or pull the tranny.
