Default Starter issue?

I have a 2007 C70 with only 42k on it. It starts fine app.60% of time but will sometimes click and not start but always on 2nd try start fine. Is this the starter or possibly ignition (key)? Also if starter is issue is there a solenoid that may be bad or is that part of the starter?

Thanks,

Bii/Indy

the click you hear is the solenoid. sometimes starters do develop "flat spots" (ie a spot in the rotation where it doesn't have a clean connection through the brushes). What happens if you try doing a jump start? does it start 100% of the time? The way to determine if you have a power cable or wiring issue is to test by applying power directly. Have you inspected the cable from the battery to the starter? check for swelling, melted insulation and consider cleaning the terminals and spades at both ends to see if that helps.

I have not but will give the jump a try....I was thinking like you in the starter there was a "dead" spot on brushes. The one constant is it starts every time after failing....probably shouldn't jinx myself lol...thx for response!

In my 50 year career in the auto repair business i have seen a couple of low mileage cars that did have "dead spots" on the armature - maybe rust - don't know did not take them apart. But the problem resolved itself after using the starters on a regular basis. I'm guessing the brushes rubbed the armature clean.

I was hoping with starting it more it would resolve itself but it is pretty consistently failing about 30% of the time and then working on restart. I did have some electrical rust issues...had to replace ECM with cloned one due to contacts being rusty...bought it in the UP last Spring from an 80 year old woman that had it transported back and forth from AZ and S FL over 10 times with only 32k on odometer.

Yep, it's pretty humid in South Florida.
