Unhappy Starter just clicks

Ok the story goes like this. Dropped the car off the road into a tree. Rebuilt the car. $5000 in body work, and another $500 in a used intercooler. In the process the garage left a light on in the trunk and killed the battery at least twice. I drove the car home and it set for a month. I tried to start it but it cranked slow. I did not crank for long. I put a charger on for 15 minute and then to the start setting of the charger. Started right up. I then drove it 150 plus miles, stopping and starting it a few times that afternoon. No problems. I then let it sit for an hour and now it will not start. It just clicks.

Over the last week I have charged the battery, desulinated the battery, tried to jump from my truck and with the start setting on the charger. Battery seems to take a full charge. The computer in the charger says full. Just checking the voltage it is 13.0 A little low but that should be high enough to start the car. I have checked the wiring and everything seems tight (nothing loose). I have tapped on the starter.

I do not think I burnt up a starter, but I do not know what else to try.

I really do not want to replace the starter because I can not see how I can replace it without some major disassembly.

HELP! Any suggestions will be greatly appriciated.

If the battery is good and you tried vehicle starting with a charger connected then I would inspect the cables and connections off the battery.

Have the battery load tested. It sure sounds like a battery issue. You are correct, the starter is a major pain to replace. Lots of plastic, wiring, evap parts and vacuum hoses to break. I would say removal of the fans is mandatory.

OK I replaced the battery checked the voltage on the new one. 12.5 Volts. The car started right up.

Can someone explain this to me. The old bad battery had 13.0 volts good connection plus either the 75 amp starter setting on the battery charger or jumper cable from my truck and it would not start. However, the new with less voltage did the job. I know it amperage but I would have figured that the old battery plus would have had the needed amperage.

I will have the old battery load tested before I turn it in for the core charge refund and see what that shows.

I am very happy it was just the battery but scratching my brain as to why.
