Suspected belt/idler/tensioner noise
Volvo C70 1998 T5 100k miles
Hi all,
I have been having a real annoying problem with my C70. Everytime I start the engine and its cold, a rubbing/noisy-bearing noise can be heard at around 2k rpm from the belt area of the engine. This goes away after a couple of minutes when the engine is warm and it runs great.
I noticed the serp belt was cracked so I replaced it and found that the noise still happens when the serp belt is removed. Therefore I suspected it to be the timing belt and as I dont have experience to change myself I took it to a volvo specialist and just reported the noise.
They diagnosed this noise as being the waterpump and/or idler and suggested to replace the lot and put new timing belt. So I agreed. I received a bill for 600 british pounds and the next day found out that the noise is still there!!!
I have also noticed that my crankshaft pulley for the serp belt has a slight wobble and suspect the noise could be something to do with that???
Im going crazy; does anyone have any experience or ideas about this on a T5 enignes?
Alex

RE: Suspected belt/idler/tensioner noise
Tech,
thanks for your response.
In the timing belt the garage has replaced:
[ul][*]Timing Belt[*]Tensioner[*]Idler Pulley[*]Water Pump[/ul]
In the serp/drive belt section I have replaced:
[ul][*]Sepr / Drive Belt[*]..and have briefly checked all rotating pulleys and they move freely and feel good[*]Noise still apparent when serp/drive belt is notconnected and these pulleys are not working[/ul]
What remaining parts/accessories could I have missed? Are there any remaining in the timing belt area that was not changed?
Could this be something to do with the reason that the crankshaft pulley is slightly wobbling.

I would take it right back to the people who charged you $600 and tell them. Please let us know what they say. It sounds like your theory of it being the crank pulley is correct. I'm surprised they didn't change it too when they did the tensioner, idler and water pump.

RE: Suspected belt/idler/tensioner noise
I am kind of surprised that the crankshaft pulley would be the culprit, since it is basically solidly bolted to the end of the crankshaft, and doesn't really have any moving parts or bearing surfaces (of its own) to wear out. It doesn't seem like it should wobble, either, unless the design is such that the bolting on of the pulley allows some degree of lack of aligning or centering on the crank shaft. If theplay is in the crank shaft bearings (main bearings) themselves then you have bigger problems!

RE: Suspected belt/idler/tensioner noise
If you look at70 series Volvo crankshaft pulleys on my year they have a solid inner part and then a layer of rubber and a solid outer part. The rubber looks perished and I suspect that this is causing the wobble and even the rubbing/worn-bearing noise ...but Im really not sure.
When I get some time away from work and good weather to investigate this I will post my results.

Interesting - now I understand why you suspect the crank pulley. Good luck with it!
