Pretty handy, I'm a mechanic at a packaging plant and also maintain the forklifts. I guess the first thing I should do is get a good manual.

 

You scared me straight that I am about to order timing belt kit from FCP Groton. Question, is there a big difference between the FCP Groton kit vs. the Genuine Volvo kit aside the price of about $170 for a 2002 C70 2.3L HPT coupe? This should have everything needed correct? TIA.

Thanks for your comment Tech. It's been a while since I browsed through these forums and I see that you are continuing to provide valuable resources same as ever. I ended up going with the genuine VOLVO kit from FCP Groton after seeing that they have a 10% off coupon for this month "JUNEBUG". My shop (that I've taken my Audi's and Benz previously) recommended to only stick with genuine VOLVO parts as well.

I'll be asking suspension questions on another thread after doing some searches on this forum.

I had my timing belt replaced on my 2002 C70 at 115,000 at Volvo of Lisle, IL for $550.
Including a new tensioner.

 

I have a 2000 C70 convertible turbo 5 speed. Bought used in March. Just turned 93,000 and needs a timing belt ASAP. I do not have the talent or tools to do it myself. Should I go to a local garage or the dealer for this?

 

A local Garage that Knows Volvo's is fine.

I just purchased a 2001 C70 from down in Miami and have here in Colorado - it just hit 40K miles should I go and get the timing belt replaced? The car appears mint and in good repair.

Is it something I can "inspect" fairly easily and does it require much removal to check (is there some type of inspection port)? I was planning to take in for an oil change and service to my Volvo mechanic maybe it is a "cheap check"?? Btw, should I run synthetic in this motor???

I would atleast have it inspected. Mileage is low but it is an 01 so 10 years already on that belt.

You can run synthetic if you want. I am on the wall about synthetic.

Since a Kevlar timing belt was mentioned earlier in the thread I thought I'd post this.

I am on the verge of purchasing a 2006 C70 with only 17,000 miles on it. It's a long way to 70k but the belt already has 5 years of easy life on it. Based on age, how old it too old?

 

You might consider buying a warranty, lots of problems with '06 tops (I think it also could have been the first year of hardtop). Just my opinion as I looked at alot of '06, there were alot of low mile '06 on the market back when I bought my '07. Even though I would have done well on price on '06 with few thousand miles I decided to stay away from them and buy a new '07.

 

That was one of my concerns, that and I read a lot of people complaining about alignment issues with the 2006. It's a private party purchase and a steal at 16k so I might have to look into aftermarket warranties.

 

My 1998 C70 Coupe is all original. 36k miles, but 13 yrs old. Saw recommended change of timing belt @ 5 yrs. New info to me. Saw complete timing belt & water pump kit, around $300 for kit, going to purchase & replace in spring. Any suggestions? I believe in preventative maintenance & want to repair replace anything on my schedule, not when it breaks! All fluids & filters changed anuually! Thanks!
