Similar thing happened to me when I replaced the plastic cover on my fob. I immediately took it apart again and realized when I took it apart originally, I failed to install it so the tiny components could come in contact with one another when the button was depressed. Try taking the whole thing apart (on top of a counter or table so you do not drop anything) and reassembling it together with that in mind. If you do not have any luck with that, you could try spraying a water displacing spray like WD-40 on the battery terminals. It is certainly possible that over time the battery terminals got a coating of corrosion, dirt, or dust after years of being placed in pockets and in miscellaneous places. Good luck with the fix!

Also, remember that the key opening system has a battery too.
