04 S40 Reverse Synchro Help!!
I have a 2005 S40 2.4i. I was driving my car the a few days ago when I carelessly upshifted from third missing fourth and hit the reverse gear around 40mph. The next day I went to revers into a parking space and the shifter popped out of gear with a slight grinding noise and feeling, I attempted this two or three times before i held the shifter in place which worked. However holding the shifter in gear, there is still a slight kicking from the transmission with some noise with it.
Ive realized what the issue is but my question is how much, on average, could replacing the part cost, as well as if driving with this potentially broken part could be damaging the transmission.
Thanks

The part itself wouldn't be too expensive (say under $100) but you'll need to pull the transmission then open it up and pull out the gear shaft and reassemble. Most likely you broke off a few pieces or cracked the ring so its just sitting there . I had a couple of cars (an old VW and a Capri) with broken synchros that didn't do more damage but I suppose its always possible but in my view, the transmission is toast already. I'd probably start shopping for a used manual transmission to replace the whole unit (and do the clutch at the same time). I doubt a repair shop could install the new part for less than the $500-600 a replacement will cost.
