89 240 DL - No reverse, help.
Over the weekend my 240 DL was running fine. I attempted a 3 point turn. I managed to reverse, then go forward, then as I tried to reverse again - there wasn't anything. The reverse clasp under the gear shifter doesn't feel like it is attached to anything any more. It can move up and down without any tention. I am hoping there is a simple fix for this but I wasn't able to find any information on the net or in the manual. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
There is supposed to be bushings where the rod meets the transmission and the shifter assy.Try to put the car almost in nuetral and see if you have reverse then.If so you need to replace the bushings. If not then I think your trans is bad.If the carstill has drive then the rod is still attached and the bushing are probably gone.
Thanks for the information Tech! I do still have drive and haven't notice any other problems or differences in the cars normal activitiy. I have continued to used the car without using reverse, is it bad to continue? Is this a repair that I can do on my own? Any idea of what it might cost (just a ball-park figure - $20? $200? $900?) if I need to take it to a shop? Do you know of any schematics/diagrams I can view so I have a better idea of this malfunction? Sorry for all the questions. Any info you can offer is more than I have now. Thanks again.
If you do it the cost will be about $20.00 if you have the dealer do it will be like $150.00-200.00.It is not that hard look under the car on the drivers side of the trans. You will see 2 rods that go to the transmission from where the shifter comes through the floor.Where they attach to the shifter and the trans the bushings should be there. I posted a pick of kinda what it looks like.Yours is almost the exact same as the pic.
