Default 05 s40 T5 Low beam Bulb failure wierdness

Hey guys,
I have a 2005 s40 T5 with HID headlights, and recently I've been getting the dash message of "Bulb Failure Low Beam". When this happens my passenger low beam headlight goes out. However after a few minutes or after stopping and restarting the car it might come back on. It's been doing this semi consistently for a week or so. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem before, and if it actually means that the bulb is failing and I need to replace it. Only reason that I'm sceptical is this. This happened twice last spring and then worked perfectly and didn't happen again until this summer (more than a full year later). Only other thing I could possibly think of is some kind of under-voltage situation, but everything else about the car is fine as far as I can tell.

Appreciate any input.

-Bill

Hi Bill,

I realise its 2 years since your post but windered if you resolved your bulb issue? I have the same model and year with the exactly the same issue. The passenger bulb goes out and the warning message is shown, however if I stop and restart the car - or switch to side lights for a few seconds and then back to running lights then the passenger dipped light comes on again. This started happening intermittently 2 winters ago but then was fine during the summer months and has just started failing again which co-incides with the recent colder weather.

I have an S40 2004 with exactly the same problem on the passenger side. Its been two years and still getting the low beam failure indication but turning the headlights on and off corrects the problem and so does turning the car on and off. Sometimes the bulb actually is out but next time its back on and going strong. Is it the bulb? ballast? or igniter?

the cheapest way to find out, is to switch the bulb from side to side then see if it happen on the other side. if so, then for sure u know is the bulb

Switched bulbs and got the low beam failure indication and bulb out on same problem side. What else is user friendly to change.

Try turning your dial for your lights pointing up this should keep the problem to a minimal when it does come on just turn you car off then it should be fine. When j put my hid kit on it always it that whenni would have it set pointing left or just having the day runners going will reset the issue to.

For what its worth I sorted my intermittent bulb failure issue by replacing both bulbs. My local Volvo garage predictably quoted an astronomical figure when I called them, so instead i went to hids4u.co.uk and bought a pair of their "Osram D2S Xenon HID Headlight Bulb" for £70. Replacing the bulbs was a breeze since both headlamp units completely slide out for easy access. All done in 10 mins and no bulb issues since.

I'm having same issue with 2004 S60. Changed bulbs, no fix. Cleaned contacts as best I could, no fix. Any other ideas anyone?
