06 s40 flywheel
First I replaced battery, alternator, spark plugs and ignition sensor and had an oil change( regularly).
The man that worked on my car first( last year) f-ed it up because he didn't know what he was doing( or wanted to rip me off- which he did). First we were told get a battery( car would not turn over after a few clicking noises it when
Dead- no lights on dash or sounds). So we replaced the battery. That didn't help much but did get the car to make the clicking sounds( as if it was trying to turn over and lights on).
The car never started. I was told it was a starter( so mine was rebuilt) however the selinoid mysteriously broke when they tried to install it. They installed it anyway
And stated they couldn't get parts for my
Year make and model.
I did not replace my seliniod. My car was towed away and was not able to start without a Jumper. Then I was told it needed a New alt, so I bought one. Car still had same issue. Click click click like a failing battery.
No other sound( Dash lights up) .Then took it to a diff place and they said the wires where put in wrong. Paid them to wire properly. Car still needed a jump to start it up.

Fast forward to now:
With new battery, alt,
Spark plugs and a ignition sensor- the car will start but only after 1-20 minutes of turning the key in the ignition And generally runs fine while running but when I shut it off I always have to take 1-20 minutes to start it. It will only make a clicking sound once with each key turn all lights,
Sounds and dash light up normally as they would. After 1-20 minutes of turning key the car finally starts and drives generally well.(140,000 mile club).
My problem is why does the car do this?,
The mechanic mentioned a fly wheel- like he thinks it's the fly wheel.( is he looking at me like a cash cow) after all he is the guy who sold me a car battery and does all oil changes.
It starts and runs fine after several turns of the key, it starts up quicker in warmer weather and it takes several more tries to start in harsher colder weather and I have noticed:
My trunk light is staying on( trunk lid open) and it's not open but it also shuts off when I go over bumps
At times- then it flickers back on at times.
Electrical?
I never replaced the broken seliniod. Could this be the problem?
Can the car work with a broken selinoid?
I bought a new starter ready to be installed and I want someone's advice on what they believe I should be looking at. Fly wheel, new starter, selinod or what?
Everyone keeps telling me the starter is engaging. I'm wondering if I need to replace the seliniod only so the car starts up as normal without the efforts.
I bought this car with 30,000
Miles on it in 2007 with its bumper to
Bumper protection from a dealer.
I have always taken fairly good car of it( regular oil changes
And all that).
Help
please

To me your description does sound like a starter issue. A rapid "click, click, click" is the classic sound made by the solenoid due to a weak battery. However, a single metallic "clunk" describes the solenoid pushing the bendix into the flywheel teeth as it should but the starter motor does not crank the engine over (i.e. bad starter). Now if your flywheel teeth or bendix teeth were bad you should hear grinding as the starter motor turns.
I just looked up the price of a starter and wow they are expensive. I'd take it to the rebuilders and have them check it for you.
