2000 S40 Rear brake help!
Hey guys,
just bought a 00 Volvo S40 so im pretty new to the volvo world. It has 155K miles on it so I decided to change out the brakes. Front brakes were done in less than 20 mins, piece of cake. The rear brakes are a different story. The piston does not push back with a C-clamp, I found out I needed some tool to twist it and push it slightly at the same time. Went to autozone...got a cube looking tool the guy told me would work, but it was too small for the grooves on the rearpistons. Not being able to push it back nor insert even the old brake pads I securied the caliper but did not fasten it, drove it a local brake shop. The guy tells me since I drove the car without fastening the caliper the piston is sticking too far out and cannot be pushed back and I needed a new caliper assembly (although the piston did not fall out or pushed out the assembly while I was driving). Should I just bite the bullet and order a new caliper or are there any other options for me to try? Any input would be appreciated.

I had the same problem not too long ago with my rear piston. I ended up having to shell out for a new one because it had actually started leaking, but like tech said it's not really going to hurt to try and rotate and push it yourself, maybe a pair of needle nose pliers? Or if you've got the cash AutoZone sells the rear caliper kit that will fit the piston, it costs about $50-60. You might want to call ahead and see if they've got it in stock.
thanks for the response, I ended up ordering the rear caliper, now my question is how do I get the old one off? If you have done it could you give me some tips? I took all the screws out but it seems to be dangling from the emergency brake line how do i get it off and reset it on the new caliper?
