Default 2000 S40 replacement key

We just purchased a 2000 S40. They only gave us one key. Dealership said replacement total cost is $300. Something about $86 key, $85 to download software, $$$ to program car. Is there a cheaper way? How many and type of keys are given when the car is purchased new. This is our first Volvo.

Three to four keys come with the car new.
$300.00 is pretty close to get one.
There really isn't an easier way either.

Thanks for the quick answer.
Since we are a newbie, where is trunk release in the car and the non-Volvo car salesman couldn't really explain the "S" and "W" button. How do they function? I have bidded on a 2000 S40 manual on ebay to try and get future answers.

There is no trunk release from inside the car.Unless the lock is turned one way with the key the trunk unlocks and locks with the doors.

The S means Sport shifting. The W means Winter mode the car starts out in 3rd gear. That helps gain traction in the snow.

Just wait until you price out a 'key fob' ie: auto door opener, when you go for your new key.....................you will be in for your second surprise!!!

Just brought my baby "Hadassah" home this afternoon. Also seeking a spare key. Stumbled upon this site web surfing for answers.

Also need new key fob.
'97 S90 - our single fob has gone thru the washer too many times - new batteries don't fix it :-(
The fob only has two buttons - this means it will be cheaper - right!?!?!?! ;-)

Keys still have to be ordered/programed through the dealership.

I bought a FOB off of ebay a few years ago. Still had to have it programmed at the dealer though. Still wasn't cheap, but I think I saved around $100 IIRC...
