Fold down the back seats and climb in the trunk. Most Volvos have another trunk release on the underside of the inside of the trunk. Find it and pull it. If that doesn't do it, it must be jammed. A good strong pull might do it. If not, take it to a shop.
I have this issue with mine from time to time as well. I was told to unlock the car manually twice, with the interior switch. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If anyone has additional info, it would be most appreciated.
I replaced the battery in my remote, as the trunk would not open manually most of the time, and unfortunately, it STILL doesn't work!!! I will try to find the interior trunk release in the meantime.
Does anyone know what the issue is?

When trying to open manually, can you hear the boot mechanism 'clicking' as you try to open it? If so, try pushing down hard on the boot, and then try opening again.
I have a 2006 S40 and my boot stops opening from time to time, and this is how I get round it - a hard push down on the boot. Definitely a Volvo flaw!
