Greetings,
My 2001 s40 is supposed to hold 15 gallons of gas. However, the fuel light comes on and it only takes 10 gallons. Any feedback would be appreciated!

There are many people, including myself, that have a discrepancy between what our fuel gauges say and what really is in the gas tank.I always fill up when I have about 40 miles before the computer says Iam on empty, and I always end up pumping just around 10 gallons. I remembered reading that the fuel tank held 16 gallons. I may be wrong, as haven't read my manual in a while.

All in all it is better to not run out of fuel, nor have your engine eat the junk out of the bottom of the tank. Some day I'll load the trunk with a filled gas can, and see just how much farther I can get. I'll let you know when I find out.

I decided to poke around the other forums to find the answer.

At least someone said, or implied, that Volvo wants us to have 6 extra gallons in the tank...while we are biting our nails to get to the pump! So I guess we can comfortably drive for around 150 miles before really having to fill up again!

Chevrolet lost a class action suit on this type of situation. The mid 90's Tahoes would read empty and still have about 7.5 gal in the tank.

 

Wonder if anyone has tested it with our cars? (Who wants to be a lab rat? )

To throw in my 2 cents, according to my 2003 S40 owner's manual, the tank is supposed to hold 16 gallons, but every time I've filled it when the guage says half a tank, I end up needing only 6 gallons. My conclusion was that the manual was incorrect and the tank only holds 12 gallons - but maybe the guage is off (on purpose by Volvo, or not?), and the manual is correct.
