Default 2001 s40 O2 sensor replacement question

Hi all,

My wife's s40 was throwing codes (128, 130, 442 if memory serves me right).

Small evaporative leak, O2 sensor and thermostat - I replaced the thermostat and sensor, and just now replaced the top O2 sensor. I got it installed and when starting the car it was smoking at the O2 sensor I just replaced.

I assumed it was the grease burning off, but want to be sure something didn't go wrong.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I installed a Bosch sensor. Also, how long before the codes can be cleared?

Thanks in advance.

Nomo

Codes can be cleared immediately if you have access to a code reader. If you mean when will the ECM clear the codes on it's own? Eventually.... Don't know the answer.

Anyone?

I'm thinking that there is no issue with a little smoke coming from your O2 sensor assuming that it burns off in rather short order and doesn't continue. Also, not trying to be insulting at all, but did you tighten it down to the correct torque spec? Definitely go ahead and clear your codes. If you don't have a code reader yet, I would definitely recommend one to the Volvo owner. Our cars like to set off CELs. Otherwise you're goin to a shop, a friend’s or the knuckleheads down at AutoZone etc., just to see what your codes are and then again after you've made the repair. Not efficient and it gets old, fast. If you're interested I have a particular one that I recommend. Lemme know. Also what did your EVAP leak turn out to be?

A lot of the "CEL" in these cars is just loss of communication, which is 99.9% of the time a weak battery. A slow battery charge for an hour usually fixes the recurring Engine Light.

yea, after clearing any stored codes. Battery voltage on the late model cars and truck is very important.

Great. Will try that as I picked up a 00 S40 last night that barely started, sounds like the battery is about to go. Lady mentioned she hasn't used it for about a year. I'll go ahead and recharge the batter tonight and see how it turns out tomorrow. Thx
