Default 2001 stereo

So my stereo tends to go to antitheft mode and when I put the code in, it still doesn't work. So I decided to get aftermarket stereo. So after a short hunt of finding a bracket to fill the gap of the gianormous stock radio, the guys in the audio store mentioned that the car itself has a built in amp, and I need a specialist to install it or else I blow my whole system. Now is that true or was the guy just trying to gey cash? My brother installs stereos but he's not trained, he just kind of mess'd around with them over the years but he's never done a volvo. My brother says that all cars read at 12v and it shouldn't be a problem. Now I'm not sure who to believe, I just don't want to spend more money than I need to, please help, much appreciated

Some of the 2003-2004 models had an external amp. I am not aware of one in the 2001. I had replaced the system in my 2002 with no problem. The installation should be very typical. There are wire harness connectors available for the car.

If you have the HU-xxx series head unit, the connectors are:
The Metra 70-9221 (for the 1999 and up S80 harness) fits the 2002 S40 harness and Metra 40-VL10 for the antenna.

Metra has a different connector for the SC-xxx series but I don't recall the number.

There is a single DIN pocket available from Volvo that fills the gap when you install a single DIN head unit. The part number is: 30613741. I tried an aftermarket pocket and it was trash. The Volvo one is 100% better.

Hope this helps

So after going to receive the radio connector, I had the guy look for this so called amp I have, and its no where to be found. The plastic thing I bought was crap indeed and I'm going to look into that part number you gave me. Thanx, much appreciated, I'm going for the install tommarow morning, hope it all goes well

What all are you planning to install: head unit, amp, speakers, etc.? We can guide you through.

Just installing a head unit. We had to route a wire to the cigar lighter fuse so the stereo could hold memory because it wasn't working for some reason. Now my clock by the mileage and the sub mileage keeps reseting. Also my inside lights won't turn on anymore. Are all those linked to that fuse?

Here is a wiring diagram for a '02 S40 audio system if it will help. Probably even more helpful...a link to the wiring diagrams for your car.
