2002 S40 cam locking tool

Default 2002 S40 cam locking tool

I have the Volvo cam locking tool and have a question? When the tool has the cams locked in place, and the timing belt off should I be able to rotate the crank 360 deg. without the piston hitting the valves?

I'd say not. When the cams are locked, the valves with be in varying open states by cylinder. when you rotate the crank you'll be actuating the pistons which will risk finding any open valves.

With that being said,with both cams locked into the proper position and the crank timing gear mark lined up to oil pump mark is there any way this could not be set right? In other words, can it still be 180 Deg out?

I read someplace that the marked/locked position for TB change on the 1.9T is such that you can indeed spin the crank to your heart's content without damaging valves. Since that is what I recall reading someplace on the internet I guess all I am really saying is your experience substantiates this. (I hope!)

I'm not sure about the crank mark. There is also a lock and if the mark and the lock pin hole line up I would think it is good. Access for the lock pin sounds interesting (never locked the crank--just read about it before doing the TB on ours). I am guessing you should be okay, but I am not positive. Hopefully someone who knows these engines better can chime in.

No. The groove on the end of the cam is off center. What this means is that at 180* out the groove will be in the wrong position for the cam holder tool. The crank only does one turn for every two of the cams so it can never be 180* if it's lined up with the timing mark.

This is not the 2000-2004 but the cams are similar.

With the crank at it's timing mark you can move the cams without hitting anything. This is so you can move the cams into position for installing the timing belt.

I do not believe the same applies to the crank with the cams locked in place since you will have some open valves.

Thanks Hudini! That makes total sense. I thought was the case but wasn't sure enough to put it into such clear wording. I don't know these engines the way I know Audi engines so this helps next time I have to work on it.

I would make sure your cam tool has the male parts that are off center to match the groove on the cams. I can't tell by this picture and I'm not at home to check my cam tool.
