Default 2002 Volvo s40 fuel sending unit

On my 2002 Volvo s40 the fuel gauge stopped working. It hangs on empty or close to it. I think the sending unit needs to be replaced.

By filling up the tank, all it does is say that I have 35 miles left in my gas tank and that is on a fill up!

I think the issue is the sending unit for the car. Is it hard to replace? Is it hard to remove the sending unit from the car?

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

Newportj

You have to remove the rear seat, remove the access cover and remove the fuel pump assembly. I would try to test the system before I spent the money on a complete assembly. Could it be the gauge?

It's all one big unit so I don't think you can find the parts separately from the auto parts store.

Replacing the unit isnt hard but to get to it could be.If you are handy then don't buy the entire assembly just the sender and replace it yourself. You better rent a plastic collar removal tool or you will be swearing a lot and give up before you even start. It's a big black plastic ring.
Try to see a junkyard for this part you can get it for cheap.First try to see if there is corrosion on the sender which if you have water in the tank will happen.Clean it if you do then clean the tank as well.
Be safe disconnect the battery and have a fire extinguisher next to you.
