Hey all, thanks for taking the time to read this in advance.

First off, let me say I have a 2002 Volvo S40 with approximately 118k on it. The issue I am currently having is that the driver's side window has issues going up/down. It seems to have dead spots. If I pull up on it, and wiggle it around for a bit, with a decent amount of human strength, it will then go up. There is no gear teeth noises or anything of that matter. When it goes down though, it does have a high pitched squeal. The dead spots are approximately in 1/3rds of the full ROM of the window. When the window is in these dead spots, the window will usually neither go up, nor down.

I have searched a bit and have really come up with the fact that it may be the switch or motor itself. What I have noticed is that in these dead spots, while operating the switch, the power does dim very minutely just as the other windows do with normal function. So it's definitely getting power. I'm just not sure if it is the motor or the switch. Today is raining so I can't exactly look at it with ease. All 3 of the other windows work.

The switch wouldn't make the noise I think it is safe to eliminate it as a problem.Motor could be but my guess is the track.You are gonna have to open up the door panel and look.There is probably some corrosion going on if you are lucky you could fix it up with some WD-40.

 

I had something similar happening with my 2010 V70 and it turned out that the rubber/felt track was sufficiently worn that the window was catching. I replaced the rubber/felt bit and all was smooth once again.


Someone suggested liberally spraying silicon down both sides of the rubber/felt liner to see if that improved things. if it does, you may very well have a worn rubber liner.

 

So, as it turns out, it was in fact the felt/rubber channel. I went ahead and smacked some wheel bearing grease in the channels and it still grabs a little, but it does go up now. So that should work for a while. Anyways, thanks again guys. I really appreciate it. Have a good rest of your weekends!
