I have replaced the antenna in my 2003 Volvo numerous times and within about 2 months they lock up and start popping when the radio is turned on or off. When I take them out and try sliding the antenna up and down the top stays smooth but the bottom feels gritty. Either this is the worst engineered antenna or something is off on mine. I am considering changing the whole mast and also the antenna nut so I can start off with everything new. My antenna has the smooth plastic line that runs in the middle of it just in case that helps. Anybody have any help or has anyone dealt with this before?

If you really want to keep the motorized antenna I would take the unit apart and clean all of the old grease out of it and put new in. My 2003 S40's antenna got ripped off completely and I just replaced it with a universal fixed one from Autozone. But I did open the unit out of curiosity and the grease in there was pretty dried up, so I would start there. There are aftermarket mast asseblies for these and they are pretty cheap if the new grease doesn't help.
