Default 2004 S40 Airbag light is on

A steady airbag light (red) is on after I plopped a book bag weighing about 20 LBS on the front passenger seat. As someone suggested I removed the battery and reconnected while the ignition key is on II position. But did not work. Did I do it right? Should I have waited for a while? I even disconnected and reconnected every plug under the passenger seat. Dealer said it need to be reset by a computer. It will cost me $167 to diagnose plus any work is required (Ouch!). Is there any cheaper way to correct this problem? What does the light mean? Will the airbag be deployed in case of a collision? Dealer said it won't but I am a little skeptical. Any suggestions? Thank you for your help.

It more than likely has to do with the OWS (occupant weight sensor). try a full network reset by removing both terminals and touching them together for 15 min.

Dear SVTfocus03,

It did not work, unfortunately. I disconnected the battery cables from the battery and connected the two cables for 15 minutes as you suggested. When I turned on the engine, the light flashed once and stayed on. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks, I guess I will have to spend money. But until then, what is the consequence? Is airbag disabled?

The S40 dyno is kinda hard to interpret as there is no stock S40 dyno given and the 2 tests shown were on disimilar octane fuels and exhaust mods.Besides on the dyno charts for the S40, has anyone seen ipd list an estimated increase in TQ for any of the volvo models? Their website says nothing about what kinda numbers they got on any of the volvos..Let hope they give stock vs stage 1 dynos using the same octane fuel for comparison.

The S40 is a bit difficult to interpret because there is no S40 Dyno given stock and the two samples were presented octane and exhaust mods disimilar. I stopped taking them seriously, and I am at the end of my wits to get the problem fixed anywhere - and that is why I am here. What do you suggest is the problem with the room air bag light, and how do I know it is fixed rather than someone just turn the warning light off. " I do not trust my local service at this time.
