Exclamation 2005 Volvo S40 2.4i

Hey everyone,

I'm new to this and I've been having issues with me car. I am a proud owner of a 2005 Volvo S40 2.4i with 260 km (I bought it with 240 km on it over a year ago). It is my first car and I love it but it has been giving me quite a few issues. The previous owner obviously didn't take care of it so there was many issues when I first bought it. I replaced many things like the clutch, the battery and so on. I drove my car just the day before and it started up fine but when I attempted to start it today, it started but the idle was very rough and the car dropped to very low rpms and shut off. This lasted only a few seconds and it continues to do the same thing every time I try to start it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Welcome to the S40 board! Any check engine light going on? First thing to check would be the fuel pump relay (simple to replace... ). Give a visual check under the hood - any vacuum line or hoses pop off? What happens when you strart up - can you get it to rev at all or does it die right away?

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, you have a check engine light?

I would start by checking the fuel pressure. Your car has a fuel pressure sensor to regulate the fuel pressure by changing the voltage to the fuel pump. No more fuel pressure regulator like on the older 1.9L turbo engines. If this sensor goes bad then your car will act up as it's not getting the correct amount of fuel.

Other areas of concern are the Electronic Throttle Control (drive-by-wire). If this gets dirty and gummed up it can cause issues. This is not normally a sudden issue, more like a gradual decline in idle quality and throttle response. The fix is a thorough cleaning and a new gasket.
