2006 S40 timing belt do i have to change?
I took my car for oil change and dealer suggests me to change timing belt and drive belt asap.
my car mileage is 103K its 2006 S40 2.4i model.
car drives about 5k/year only and i'm in CA.
I took for drive belt change at other volvo mechanics and he tells me drive belts are still good no needed right away.
now looking at my VIN# YV1MS39066XXXXXXX and referring to my schedule maintenance book..
does this mean my engine code is #39
I can do timing belt service only around 150K.....??
i'm bit confused since dealer told me to change and the other mechanics suggest me to do asap...…
<<<<TIMING BELT, TENSIONER AND IDLER PULLEY: REPLACE All 5-cylinder models. – Models identified by engine VIN codes 39 and 64 sold in California, Massachusetts, Vermont, New York and Maine are classified as PZEV vehicles. The timing belt and tensioner replacement interval for these vehicles only is 15 years or 150,000 miles. For service intervals beyond 150,000 miles, consult your authorized Volvo retailer. – Maximum replacement time interval for all engines except engine VIN codes 39 and 64 is 10 years. >>>>>
can pls. someone confirm with me if this has to be done asap.
thanks.

A couple of handy bookmarks for the masses
https://www.volvotechinfo.com/index....ltInterval.pdf - Volvo's service bulletin for timing belt intervals
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Vehicl...olvo/VIN_Codes - A wiki on decoding VINs and finding your engine code
So from your VIN, you have a 39 in the 6/7 position = B5244S7 S40/V50 2.4i FWD (you can also find the B code on the build plates under the hood and on the engine sticker to verify). From the service bulletin, your interval is 15 years/150K. Now with that said, you're due within the next year so unless you plan on selling the car by then, you should consider replacing the belt, idler, tensioner as welll as the serpentine belt and its tensioner/idlers at your earliest convenience. Not uncommon for a serpentine belt to let go and take out the timing belt...

even though mileage is 103k since i'm nearing to close to 15yrs I think i'm closer by nxt year or do this year?
but shouldn't wait around 130k ??
car still runs good and i'm thinking to keep it as long as it goes...…
thanks

keep in mind the serpentine belt, the timing belt idler and tensioners can cause the failure - its not always due to the timing belt itself. Yes its an expensive job (budget $600) but its a whole lot cheaper than having a failure and needing a $2500 head rebuild. Besides, if you go to sell the car, the first thing a savvy buyer will ask is whether the timing belt has been done and discount that from the price.
