Always, always, always start out with a fluid drain-and-fill. Just make sure to use the right fluid.

And FWIW, my 2005 V50 did the same thing, and ended up being bad shift solenoid(s).

I did a video showing how to swap the solenoids, as well as giving you the info on doing a fluid drain and fill.

I had VIDA installed on a laptop (and the appropriate cables / adapters to make it work), and I did the suggested "training drive" as well. I'd strongly recommend doing the fluid reset and resetting the transmission adaptations if you also have access to VIDA (and of course, also doing the specific training drive to help the reset tranny learn the new hardware / fluid). I'm pretty certain that if you don't do this, it'll still eventually adapt on its own and produce good shifting, but it'll just take longer.

And FWIW, if you don't have VIDA (which can be pretty fiddly to install and get working properly) you might consider a two-way scanner that's specific to Volvos. I've had good luck on my last two vehicles (BMW and Mercedes) using the Autophix scanners. The Volvo version is the Autophix 7110, which is
currently not much over $100 on Amazon currently not much over $100 on Amazon
(looks to be a pretty good deal, but I did NO searching for the best deal).
