It is under the Dash on the Passenger side of the car. Remove the 2 or 3 Phillips screws holding the panel up under the dash and remove. Then look at the bottom of the climate box. You will see a long skinny panel that looks like it is clipped in. It is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide and about 8 to 10 inches long. It goes from the dash when you look at it foward. If you push and unclip the panel it will come down. Then you can slide it out and remove the pollen filter.

How about the cabin air filter for a 2005 S-40? I hear it's behind the gas pedal, and probably the dealer has to do it. Sound right? When I use the A/C, it smells like a furnace that hasn't run for a while. I figure it needs a new filter...

You are correct. On the new S40's the filter is located in a position where the gas pedal needs to be removed. It's the biggest PITA ever!. It's usually easiest to do w/ a 3/8 air ratchet w/ a 6" extension and a 10mm deep well swivel socket. That is to remove the pedal. The cabin filter panel door is 3 7mm's and voila, you are at your cabin filter.

Pay special attention to the nuts holding on the gas pedal, they love to strip themselves out.
