Default after market spark plugs

When my 2000 S40 hit 90K, I took it in to a non-Volvo shop for service. After the service, I started having problems starting it up. It cranked for a long time before starting. Now, 10K later, my 3rd cylinder wasn't firing. The Volvo shop replaced a coil and put in Volvo spark plugs...saying that it might be the after- market spark plugs that caused the problem. It starts up just fine now.

Is this a common problem on newer Volvos? Can I return the old spark plugs to the shop and get my money back?

I read somewhere that Bosch supplies plugs to Volvo. Remember that some Volvos use platinum plugs and Bosch was the very first manufacturer to create them for the mass market. I have Bosch platinum (single electrode) in my c70 and have had excellent results. Then again I have used Bosch platinum in my Japanese and German autos also. Believe it or not, I have them in my Healy and they are terrific! I question some of the multi electrode plugs that Bosch makes.............but then again, I have had such good luck with the single electrode plugs that I hesitate to change.

Yes Bosch makes them for Volvo.
Thats what we buy BUT I have seen some of them go bad early.

TECH, I gap my plugs 5 to 10 thousands greater than what the 'book' calls for. Platinum plugs call for a wider gap and I wonder if the plugs are failing because they are set at .30 to .35?? Platinum's can't take a 'narrow' gap?
Reg
p.s. I have a "hot" ignition in my Hartge and if I don't gap at .45 to .48 I can literally burn the electrode off the plug!
