Make sure you use a kit with a pressure gauge and measure to the pressure appropriate to your ambient temperature. The kit should have a chart inside

Also, if you are way down on pressure, you may need to jumper the low pressure sensor to allow the compressor to kick on and suck in the refridgerant from the low port.

Final thought is, if you are way down on pressure, you probably have a leak and you should have the system professionally serviced. The system contains both refridgerant and oil - so if you are simply topping pressure you need to know if the refill kit has oil or not (too much oil in the system is not good). A professional servicing will inject a dye to look for leaks (ie o-rings can fail, condensors and evaporators can develop pin holes and the dye will show where the leak is). Next they would correct the leak and likely replace the orifice valve and accumulator, evacuate the system to pull out all air/moisture and oils, then recharge with the proper amount of oil and refridgerant to minimize the risk of damaging the compressor.
