Default Any Advice before I buy a 2005 s40?

6 speed manual transmission. 114K asking $8,900.00 Thats about all I know. Gonna run a carfax on it. I've heard they have electrical problems. Any advice or tips on what to look for? Sorry if this thread seems silly, but I got screwed last year when I purchased a 2001 S80 and I really don't want to go through that again. Also, if the tansmission is manual is it less likely to go out? Thanks!

Check to see how the clutch feels while driving and how close it is to the end of the pedal, check brake fuild, hydronic fuild, power steering etc. Just gives you a idea of how well the took car of the car. I dont know much about volvo clutchs as i just joined this form for my wifes car but generally clutches need replaced around 100k but thats not always the case. My acura tl has 160k on it and still have original clutch with plenty of pedal to go. All depends on how well the pervious owner knew how to drive a stick.

And trust the carfax. Run away from any reported crashes. Especially if the car changed owners around the time of the accident.

Hopefully any electrical issues have been resolved by now. Volvo has been good about addressing such issues. Most were fixed with software updates.

I know how you feel having previous cars with issues. My '98 V70 and the '02 S40 were problematic. I swore I wouldn't buy another Volvo until my S40 got totaled. I was so impressed with how well it protected me that I decided to buy another. My '05 V50 has been a good one and is big step up from the '02 S40 in most every way.

Bottom line, I think the reliability has more to do with the individual car and how it was treated.
