Anyone know what this pipe is please?
Hi everyone
it appears that this pipe is leaking oil (I think it’s this one! ) quite a bit of oil over the engine underneath it. Does any of you know the name of this pipe please? It’s a 2006 S40. Thanks. Jenny 🙂

I hope it's not that pipe because I think that is your intake pipe ( Looks like a diesel which I am not good with because we do not have these in America) which should not have oil leaking from it like that. Could it be vapor from your dip stick nearby? Bad O-rings there? Usually oil on the engine with that look is from a bad seal somewhere nearby.

not sure which pipe you are referring to - the big fat one up top (which is an intake air pipe)? Generally speaking, none of the tubing up top would carry oil so the problem is likely elsewhere and the oil is being sprayed around by the wind when driving at speed. Best thing to do is to clean up the gunk and oil as best you can (check out engine cleaner products like "Gunk" - some say hose off but just be careful not to get connectors wet - I usually spray on and wipe off with a rag). Once that's done you can get a better sense of the source.
Typical leaking points are cam seals (on both ends of the top of the engine), turbo oil return line seals (there is no $.10 part that can make a bigger mess!), oil cooler line seals, front and rear main seals (ugh, hope not), oil pan gaskets and the most likely cause: the oil filter seal/oil filter housing.

Ok I will get some gunk and give it a clean to try and find out. I’ve never given it a clean up so will (hopefully) help. A mechanic said it could be that big fat pipe leaking (as oil) but if it’s an air intake pipe….🤔would possibly explain black smoke on fast acceleration due to wrong mixture? Maybe?
I’ve had the car for a year. Got new filters to change next week. Will defo try the engine cleaner
