Bad week - 2 more questions
I'm justhaving one of those weeks.[:@] First, it was my window in the other post and now I'm having a couple other problems.
1) I need to replace my coils. I just replacedmy spark plugs, butmy car is still spuddering when I step on the gas. From another tread on here, they said the next thing to do is replace my coils. This may be a very basic question, but how many coils are there and where are they located? Any recommendations on brands and prices?
2) I backed my car up into my trash can (don't ask) and it broke my left rear brake light cover. Does anyone have that part number?
Looks like I have a busy weekend ahead of me.

You don't state what year S40, so I will help with the 2000 to 2004. There are two coils, each going to two plugs. They are also under the cover that you removed to change plugs. If you go to eeuroparts, fcp groton, or swedespeed, they have pictures of them. Cost each is about $50-60 last time I looked.
As to the light cover, I would call the dealer for the part number and price, even if you don't buy from them.

I would suggest buying used, unless you planned on replacing both. Otherwise you will have the issue of wear (one in new condition, one that is original -- not a good look). Believe me, I had a headlight replaced with a new one and its obvious to me which one is newer. Ebay has one or two most of the time:

'01s and '02s should be interchangeable, but I don't own an S40. You could call the dealer for confirmation.
edit: I checked on VADIS; same part number for 01-04. # 30621883

Autozone has new Volvo OEM coils for cheap. I was as surprised as any when I opened that Duralast (AZ brand name) box and out popped a genuine Volvo coil.
Make sure the wires on your coil connectors are seated fully on the pins in the coil. Mine were able to back out due to the rubber deteriorating where the wires enter the back of the connector. Some high temp RTV fixed it. Just a dab will do ya!

You know, I've never been accused of being the brightest bulb on the tree. Even my Mom would say "Boy, you're not as dumb as you look." That's the best I got. LOL. Anyway, I have learned never to assume anything.
Well, I found the best price on eBay of course for the coils:

However, should I spend the extra money and get the wires too? Or do those wires typically not go bad and would be a waste?

Well, after reading in the other thread about how someone went to Autozone for the coils and it had a genuine Volvo part in the box, I decided to give it a try. I went there, they had to bring it over from another location and sure enough... inside the Duralast box was a genuine Volvo part, for only $43. Bought two of them of course. They are installed right now, but I won't test it out until tomorrow. Anyway, just thought I'd let everyone know that Autozone does have genuine Volvo ignition coils.
